Personal motivation was [that] most Science teachers just told Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and they didn't really get behind the science of what was happening and have a look at and integrate, really, Aboriginal perspectives into the classroom; and so I wanted to change the way and get rid of the idea of just telling Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, and get a bit of practical Aboriginal culture within the classroom.

I worked as a relief teacher at Oombulgurri, a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley. While working in Western Australia, I was involved in their Aboriginal Awareness Program and hence was very keen to be involved in the development of material that would include an Aboriginal perspective into Science teaching.

My grandmother was born on Thursday Island, which makes me a Torres Strait Islander by descent. I was thrilled to be asked by our District Consultant to be involved with our local area team, as I thought this was a really important project to be involved with.

The reason our school is involved is because we've developed and used a unit with an Aboriginal contextual base. We found the students were able to observe first-hand and connect directly to the Aboriginal experience.
